Step-by-step guide to build a content strategy

In a world full of content it’s important to make sure your content stands out because delivering quality content is more important than ever. The best way to deliver strong content is through having a content strategy.

What is a content strategy, you ask?

Well, a content strategy is a plan, a process, a vision of where you want your content to go. If you don’t have a strong content strategy that’ll lead to generic content, and generic content isn’t engaging or shareable. Also, poor quality content can be damaging to your website and possibly, even lower your organic search ranking!

How do you build a content strategy?

There are many ways to go about building a content strategy

Define your goal

As you start to create your content strategy ask yourself, “why”, why are you creating content? What’s the objective of this content, and where do you want it to end up? When you plan out your goals you’ll have an easier time determining if those goals meet your content strategy.

Conduct research

In order to have a strong content strategy, you need to have a defined audience that you want your content to reach. When you have a defined target audience, you can create more relevant and reachable content, and hopefully, the content will be read and convert more people.

If you’re trying to expand your audience, or your target audience has changed you should conduct a market research analysis

Conduct a content audit

A content audit is a key player in building a content strategy. By conducting a content audit you can see if your digital content is fitting the customer needs, your company and if it’s relevant. Also, it’ best to run a content audit at the end of the year to see what your company can improve upon, or do differently.

Create a system to manage your content

Have a system or an inventory where you can manage the content you’re putting out. That means managing the creation, publication, and the analytics of the content. You could also implement a section for future content ideas

Brainstorm content

Now it’s time for the fun part, brainstorming content ideas. Blayzer is great in that department, we can help you choose what type of content to produce. Check out our content development page!

There is a wide variety of content to choose from, so here are just a handful of options to choose from:

  • Blogs
  • Ebooks
  • Video blogs
  • Infographics
  • Surveys
  • Whitepapers
  • Memes
  • Lists

Publish & manage!

After you’ve decided what type of content to create it’s now time to publish and manage it! Create a content calendar to help you manage the disruption of the content. A content calendar should include:

  • Name
  • Status
  • Description
  • Source
